(BC540-?) Born at Elia, Italy, he became the first major Greek philosopher born on Italian soil.

A follower of Pythagoras and Xenophanes, he held that the senses were not to be trusted over reason. He founded the Eleatic School where he taught Zeno, who evolved a set of paradoxes on the senses.
