Zeno [Astro*Index]

(B.C.450-?) Born at Elea, in southern Italy, this Greek philosopher became the chief of the Eleatic school, founded by Parmenides, at Elea. He advanced four famous paradoxes, designed to disprove the possibility of motion as reported by the senses, best known of which is tale of Achilles and the Tortoise. Resolution of this paradox, which involves convergent infinite series, troubled mathematicians for nearly 2100 years until the Scottish mathematician and astronomer, James Gregory (born A.D. 1638) set it to rest. The intellectual efforts required to defeat his arguments contributed much to the progress of modern mathematics, in particular the Calculus of Sir Issac Newton.
