Newcomb, Simon [Astro*Index]

(1835-1909) Born at Wallace, Nova Scotia; died at Washington, DC.

Canadian-American astronomer.

A graduate of Harvard University, he became professor of mathematics at the Naval observatory, rising to the rank of rear admiral. And, in 1884, he became professor of mathematics and astronomy at John Hopkins. He developed new tables for the motion of the Moon and planets, improving on the tabulations of Leverrier and others. The early volumes of the Astronomical Papers of the American Ephemeris contain much of his work. He also worked with Michelson on the determination of the velocity of light.
