Lamont, Johann von [Astro*Index](lah'mohnt)
(1805-1879) Scottish-German astronomer. Born at Braemar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland; died at Munich, Germany.
He measured the intensity of the Earth's magnetic field throughout Europe. From these, and previous records, he determined (in 1862) that the intensity varied in a 10-year period. It was clear that this period roughly coincided with Schwabe's sunspot cycle, but the causal connection was not to be understood for some 50 years.
