**Kronecker, Leopold**[Astro*Index]

(kroh'ne-ker)

(1823-1891) German mathematician. Born at Liegnitz, Silesia (Legnica, Poland); died at Berlin.

He is best known for the Kronecker Delta, a mathematical symbol which uses the lowercase Greek letter delta, and both a superscript and subscript (both of which are integers). If the values of the superscript and subscript are equal, the value of the Kronecker Delta is 1; if not equal, the Kronecker Delta is 0. This mathematical device plays a major role in numerous advanced topics in Analysis, which range from complex trigonometric expressions to involved formulas found in Quantum Mechanics. Its utility lies in the elegant simplicity of otherwise "messy" mathematical formulations.
