Hevelius, Johannes [Astro*Index]

(1611-1687) German astronomer. Hevelius is the Latinized version of the German surname Hevel.

He constructed a lathe, which he used in the construction of large lenses. His detailed observations of the surface features on the Moon let to publication of Selenographia, an atlas of the Moon, unique for its use of hand-engraved copper plates for the illustration. He observed phases of Mercury, published two volumes on comets, discovered 4 comets, and produced a star catalogue of some 1500 stars.
