Gregory, James [Astro*Index]

(1638-1675) Scottish mathematician and astronomer. Born at Drumoak (near Aberdeen); died at Edinburgh.

His design of a reflecting telescope was good, but it construction resulted, as the art of grinding glass into accurate curves had not yet developed to the required level of perfection. Robert Hooke, however, successfully built a reflecting telescope of the Gregorian type. Gregory's study of Convergent Series is important in mathematics, as it resolved the Achilles and the Tortoise paradox of Zeno, which had plagued mathematicians for 2300 years.
