Gerbert [Astro*Index]

(zhare-bare')

(940?-1003) French scholar, archbishop, and Pope.

In 999, he became the first French Pope, named Sylvester II. He obtained translations of Arabic works, with the aid of which he build clocks, organs, astronomical instruments, and introduced the use of the abacus for mathematical calculation. It is likely that he made use of the 'Arabic' numerals from the writings of al-Khwarizmi, but with the zero.
