(jer-ard')

(1114?-1187) Italian scholar.

Toledo, Spain was a center of Muslim learning. Reconquered in 1085 by the Spaniards it became an excellent place to locate various Arabic works, and to confer with educated Arabs who could assist in the translations. Gerard spent most of his life at Toledo, working under Church patronage, where he translated (or supervised) 92 Arabic works into Latin, including the Almagest of Ptolemy, sections of Aristotle, and works of Hippocrates and Galen.
