**Diophantine Equations**[Astro*Index]

Algebraic equations (normally of first degree) named after Diophantus, in which all quantities (variables and constants) are integers. For example: 5x+2y=7, to find (x,y) pairs, where x and y are integers. This topic is important in the study of cycles. The use of continued fractions is frequently employed in solving equations of this type. Skill in working with these topics is necessary for understanding certain Indian works, such as the Aryabhatiya by Aryabhata.
