Conon [Astro*Index]

(BC300-?) Greek mathematician.

Born on Samos, died at Alexandria. Was a pupil of Euclid, and one of the teachers of Archimedes. The mathematical curve known as the "Spiral of Archimedes" was first investigated by Conon.

When Ptolemy III, King of Egypt, was away at war, Queen Berenice beseeched the goddess Aphrodite to return him to her safely and victorious. The hair was stolen. Conon soothed the queen, telling her that Aphrodite had taken the hair into the heavens, and placed it among the stars, where it now formed the dim constellation known as Coma Berenices (Berenice, Hair of).
