**Brahmagupta**[Astro*Index]

\brah'muh-goop'tuh\

(598?-660?) Hindu astronomer and mathematician.

Working at Ujjain, the center of Hindu science, his book on astronomy was written in 628. Although he denied the rotation of the earth, his application of algebraic methods to astronomical problems represent a significant advance in Hindu writings. His work predates the Hindu contribution of the symbol for zero (which played a central role in the development of mathematics) and the development of positional notation.
