Binet, Alfred [Astro*Index]

\bi-nay'\

1857-1911. French psychologist. Born in Nice Alpes-Maritimes; died in Paris.

He was more interested in the normal workings of the mind than the abnormal, and investigated methods of measuring human intelligence by objective means. He desired to measure the innate ability of the mind to think and reason. As a result of the tests he devised, the term intelligence quotient (IQ) reached the level of popular acceptance. His work led to the development of tests for personality, achievement, and aptitude, and many other. Such testing has recently undergone some close scrutiny, and modern investigators consider the results to be of less value than formerly thought.
