Dharma Practice Calendar
Astrologer Michael Erlewine has been studying and practicing Tibetan Buddhism since the early 1970s. He has made two pilgrimages to Tibet, can read Tibetan script, and has studied with many learned lamas of the Karma Kagyu lineage. He and his wife Margaret have run the Heart Center Karma Kagyu Study Group in Big Rapids, Michigan, since the 1980s, and their center has produced dozens of Tibetan Buddhist practice texts or sadhanas. For years Michael produced a yearly Buddhist astrological calendar by hand. Now he has implemented these calculations in a small program for the PC that will work for 100 years into the future.
Buddhist practitioners all over the world base their practice schedules on the solunar cycle, the various phases of the Moon. Where here in the West we look at the four quarters of the Moon, in India, Nepal, Tibet, and many other parts of Asia, the solunar cycle is divided into 30 sections, each is a separate lunar day. Lunar days do not correspond with calendar dates, but are separate.
The moment of the New and Full Moons, and many of the other 30 lunar days, are used for particular kinds of dharma practice, meditation, and other rituals. This 100-year practice calendar offers the Buddhist practitioners the two most popular Tibetan calendars, that used by the Dalai Lama (Phugpa), and that used by the Karmapa (Tsurphu). For those not using these formats, the exact date and time of each lunar day is given, so Buddhists of all types will find this useful.
Note: The Dharma Practice Calendar is included in the Tibetan Astrology program.
