Kathy Bates
by John Townley
There is always something edgy and quirky about Kathy Bates, however ordinary the character she may be playing, and that’s marked by Uranus on the Midheaven (reputation), always getting her noticed for her stranger roles, like in Misery. But it’s more than just passing peculiarity, because her bucket-pattern chart swings from an intangible Pisces Moon handle at the dominant arm of a mutable grand cross with Jupiter, Uranus, and the Ascendant with Mars. This woman is tied a lot tighter than most, but what shows on the surface is entirely dependent upon what mood she’s in. Add to that the dark Saturn-Pluto conjunction of 1947-48, which spawned a mini-generation of depressives like Patty Duke, and a lot of dark possibilities are always waiting to happen.
It also depends on what foot she puts forward, and that would be powered by the only earth in her chart, a compulsively Virgo Mars lodged in the hidden 12th house of psychological mood swings based on hidden triggers that make her like a minefield of trip-wires waiting to be touched. At least that’s how she plays her characters, though as a part of her trade that’s right where she’s got her professional foot on the ground. What some might be able to just darkly imagine, she can step up and do, right on the stage mark. One Academy Award and two Oscar nominations, along with two Golden Globes, bear witness to the fact.
Current events: Having a grand cross is never easy, and Kathy Bates has no doubt suffered accordingly, particularly from the vagaries of a Hollywood industry clearly slanted toward the young and willowy female. But, her strong working abilities have always pushed her through, and when her progressed Sun was right on her Pluto, she made inner lemonade out of it and came home with an Academy Award. Now transiting Pluto has finished its opposition to her MC, expect a new version, equally hard-working, to emerge.
