In the News:

Best of Chris Isaak
Chris Isaak by John Townley

Chris Isaak is an odd combination of hints of darkness mixed with essentially California lite, meeting somewhere around Nashville. But that might be expected by someone recorded by Lovin’ Spoonful producer Erik Jacobsen. His mid-Pisces adds an even more watery feel to his Cancer Sun, and that Saturn in Scorpio always suggests something dark and withheld going on, especially as it’s square a Leo Jupiter-Pluto conjunction, which by itself would make him explosively outgoing. Instead, what you get is something that lurks and is slightly edgy yet lyrical, with facile Gemini Mercury square that slippery Mars.

If the total effect is to make him seem a little dangerous, that may be also because he’s got no earth (maybe Ascendant, but we have no birth time), so he’s an automatic risk-taker without giving it a second thought, so being in his company may be at times as perilous as actually being him.

All in all, he’s really a clever combination of air and water that isn’t always what it seems, yet may seem to be something that it isn’t, and not always intentionally. Right down to his guitar. That flashy electric he plays isn’t a Gretsch White Falcon (hey, I owned one), though it’s mistaken for one. It’s a one-off Gibson with a wholly different feel, which he just lucked into. Looks Nashville, sounds blues. Is Isaak.

Current events: You tend to re-start life on a progressed New Moon, and that’s just what he did in the late ‘90s when film theme song “Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing” pulled him to new success on the backs of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut. By progression, he’s still riding that wave (with a greatest-hits album just out) until he reaches Full Moon three years hence, though he’s been wading through some Saturn transits to his Sun this year. But with no earth, that may just mean his toes are temporarily touching ground.
