In the News:

New York Yankees: Jeter left an extra-innings game against the Giants with a slight left hip strain, but manager Joe Torre said the injury is not expected to keep him out for more than one game.
Derek Jeter by John Townley

Derek Jeter is a contradictory athlete, whose all-around abilities make him both a leader and a stalwart for his team, even though individually his talents may not seem to have the number one written on them — maybe that’s why his jersey number is two, because like Avis he has to try harder. But this Jersey-born, Afro-Irish-blooded Yankee shortstop more than goes beyond what’s on his uniform. By a combination of positive attitude and determination, he has made his major league career entirely aboard the world’s most famous baseball team and has thrived as both its eighth captain and a personally popular phenom.

The positive attitude goes right to his Jupiter in Pisces, both the dominating planet as handle of a bucket-pattern chart and yet lodged in a sensitive sign that hears what everybody else is saying, intuits what directions they want to explore. With Pluto conjunct the Moon, his reaction to every situation is do-or-die determination, and he’s relentless once he’s engaged, right up until the end of the last inning.

Such self-confidence isn’t entirely inborn. With Sun and Moon in square, as a kid he internalized the differences between mom and dad and that can make for some real insecurities, especially when you throw in Pluto as a fear factor square a very serious and internal Cancer Sun conjunct Saturn. Yet, with little or no earth in his chart (no exact time, so we can’t include an Ascendant), he opts to go where angels fear to tread and takes risks without even knowing he’s doing it. And blessed by an easy Gemini Venus trine the Moon and Pluto, with a wide Neptune opposition thrown in, he has a pretty dreamy personality that allows him to carry it off on faith alone, even when the risks are high. That pattern has also pointed him to the charity work he does (his Turn 2 Foundation), supporting teen education and addiction avoidance.

All of these reflect in his play. He’s not statistically that solid a defensive shortstop (no solid earth), but when he makes a clutch play, you don’t forget it (that Jupiter). And with Cancer Saturn and Sun together, he’s a serious and reliable leader who’s always in touch with his home team, which he has known for his entire major league career.

Current events: That keystone Jupiter of his is taking some whacking from Uranus this year, destabilizing his swing and his ability to keep a smile on the face of a troubled team, as owner George Steinbrenner undergoes some seriously difficult transits and progressions which no doubt reflect upon the team. A two-year transit first to Derek’s natal and then progressed Mars (by fall) sees him showing some wear, but never enough to slow his bright and charming enthusiasm for both team and fans.
