In the News:

House
Hugh Laurie by John Townley

It is a shame there isn’t a reliable, published birth time for Hugh Laurie, as could tell an even greater tale of one of the most talented artists of our day. Even with just a solar chart you see that great Hollywood signature of charisma, the Venus-Mars conjunction. Whether in a male or a female, it always means sparkle and sex appeal a cut above the norm and hard to go wrong with, indeed. Add that it’s in Leo and it kicks it up another notch, and then add a Moon-Uranus conjunction also in Leo and you’ve got something strikingly strong and extraordinary. Sexy, inventive, creative and, well, sometimes a little bit dour and depressed. That latter is the direct result of his last-degree Mercury opposing Saturn, leading to bouts of melancholy or just rare, extreme diffidence — he says he first noticed he had a problem with depression (during a Moon-Saturn-Node combo transit/progression in 1996) when he found himself neither frightened nor excited but just “bored” while filming a particularly dangerous car-chase scene.

And of course American audiences (most of who don’t even know he’s an Eaton-Cambridge scholar and champion English rower) will recognize all these qualities in the character of the doctor who has made him famous in the series House. Sexy, clever, surprising, inventive, dour, sarcastic. But most aren’t aware of how thoroughly these qualities informed his life before House. He was for many years one of Britain’s most famous comics in the Blackadder series and is still raising the roof in sketches on Saturday Night Live and elsewhere. Well, with Uranus prominently conjunct the Moon in jolly Leo, that’s a comic’s signature for sure. And yes, that’s really him playing piano on House — and he writes what he plays, being an accomplished musician and composer. Oh, and then there’s the writing part, with a best-selling thriller-spoof novel under his belt and a more to come, including screenplays.

Current events: You don’t know where Laurie’s going. Like Liam Neeson, his essentially locomotive chart has the nodes way off in the middle of the empty spaces, almost like a bucket chart, so destiny has a way of swinging him around out of the blue and he’s got the sense to follow it. How else would he have crossed the pond and gone from comedy to drama so seamlessly? Right now his progressed Sun is right on that Venus-Mars conjunction, so he’s in the very center of being a TV sex symbol. Plus, Saturn is still sweeping all those Leo planets, so he’s got his hands full just keeping up. But when the pressure abates next year, who knows what new (or old) talent will be called upon for another oceanic leap?
