Bob Dylan
by John Townley
Bob Dylan’s chart is hard to talk about without wasting words rehashing his so utterly well-known career and personal qualities. Perhaps it might be more interesting to skip the obvious earth-shaking talent that established itself (and would have, regardless of his chart, no doubt) and look at some of the quirks. Instead of looking at all the productively workmanlike writing qualities of a Gemini Sun in the sixth house, one might stop to remember he said “you’ve got to serve somebody,” a sixth house watch-phrase. Or, that although that leading planet Mars in Pisces in the third might be looked at as signifying a dharmically mystic writer, it also indicates the lifetime personal fabricator and circus sideshow flim-flam man that he so idealized and emulated in his early career. It’s the only water in his chart, and so his feelings are always expressed as enigmas, and his actions often deliberate dissembling — slyly, on purpose.
A different look at the outer planets might be refreshing, too. With Uranus trine Neptune, he and the earliest of the Pluto-in-Leo generation with that easy aspect found little trouble with drugs, using them as tools of discovery and openers of the doors of perception. The Boomers who followed, however, had Uranus and Neptune in square, and drug use turned out to be much more dangerous than their elder siblings had prepared them for.
And a final look at that solo water Mars afflicting Sun and Jupiter might come from what else happened under that aspect the day he was born: the famed Nazi battleship Bismarck unexpectedly sunk the H.M.S. Hood with a single shot in the Denmark Strait with appalling loss of life (1416 sailors), and 5000 people drowned in a sudden flash flood on the Ganges. The price of incoming talent on earth, perhaps…
Current events: His progressed Moon has just hit his Midheaven, as it did back in 1979 when his “born-again” period commenced. Like Madonna, you ain’t seen the last reinvention, not by any means. That Pisces Mars is going to slip another one by everyone…
