Penelope Cruz
by John Townley
Although you might guess it from her slender frame, at the heart of Penelope Cruz’s chart lies a combination of stubbornness, determination, and not a little anger. Of course, look into her eyes and that’s obvious. A Taurus Sun with probably late Cancer Moon (her exact time isn’t known) provides plenty of earth and water, firmness and elegance mixed with flashing emotions, but the other part of the tale lies in a close Mars-Saturn conjunction in Cancer, where meticulous shaping of feelings makes for very intentional craftsmanship in front of the camera. By itself, that’s all it would be, but it’s square Pluto which makes for a lot of competition and power plays behind the scenes, some of which she’s won, but some she’s lost, leaving indelible marks that show in her style.
With Venus and Jupiter both in Pisces, it’s not surprising that there’s a gentle, sensitive muse always speaking through her, one that is easily injured in the necessary in-fights that make up the movie business, yet they are also a key to her art, the font to which she goes for the inner mirror to dazzle and mystify the lens when it looks inside her. Since that Jupiter’s square Neptune, she may be a little uncertain where it all comes from herself, something that might be expected when you are sometimes playing the same role in two different languages — in Vanilla Sky and its original Abre los ojos. But then, she’s fluent in four.
Current events: Her progressed Venus has just moved into Taurus and Mercury is closing on Saturn, so she’s more serious than she’s ever been. More than ever, she knows just what she wants, and it won’t be wise to stand in her way…
