In the News:

Isle of Wight Festival
Donovan Leitch by John Townley

The like of Donovan Leitch is not what we have come to expect from the rough-hewn streets of Glasgow, where punk rock and more edgy modern fare are staples. You wouldn’t think that a Venus rising in gentle Gemini would in any way represent that bumptious background. But remember, he wasn’t always that way. When he first began to sweep the British pop market, he was cast as the new Bob Dylan, an unrefined, tell-it-like-it-is folksinger who was a man of the streets. No surprise, considering that Uranus is right there with Venus and square the Moon to add irregular features and an occasionally brusque moment.

It was only a moment, however, as he was soon redressed in smooth velvets and multicolored post-Carnaby street flower child array, in which were couched lighter and catchy jazz-fringed tunes like “Sunshine Superman” and “Mellow Yellow.” Along with many of the rest of ‘60s pop, his brush with psychedelics had colored his world. But unlike a lot of the others, he neither died of it nor moved on to something either shallower or more macho. Rather like Cat Stevens, and of a similar sound, it changed his life and he followed his spiritual calling inward, virtually disappearing from the pop scene altogether.

That’s not surprising, as he has a self-sufficient bowl-type chart with intellectual Mercury leading it and the Sun in the private and spiritual 12th house. And further, the bowl is mostly below the horizon, which inclines him to private life more than public. He was actually following a higher calling all along.

Current events: Why mention a vanished ghost of the 1960s? Because maybe he’s not one. His progressed Ascendant has just changed signs, along with his progressed Moon together in fire signs. His tunes are suddenly renascent in the tracks of a spate of current films and even TV advertising. A new album is about to be released, along with a major PBS television special, in the middle of a Transcendental Meditation concert tour of the U.S. Keep your eye open for the next chapter…
