New Year's Rockin' Eve 2008
Dick Clark by John Townley

The abiding question about Dick Clark for this youth-driven culture is: how did “America’s Oldest Teenager” stay so young for so long? You might ask the same question about another seemingly-eternal mainstay of TV during his time, and that would be Johnny Carson. Your astrological answer would basically reduce to one word: Scorpio, and its old, traditional ruler, Mars.

Well, it’s a little more than that, but for sure Scorpio Moon and Venus rising with Scorpio Ascendant are both magnetic and they hide a lot, including age. By and large, that combination tends to look good on the outside, no matter what’s proceeding inside. Johnny Carson’s Scorpio Ascendant and youthful Mercury rising in that sign are a well-known example. But further, energetic Mars in enthusiastic Sagittarius is conjunct both the Sun and Mercury, exuding the active, upbeat, expansive kind of attitude that is identified with youth. On top of that, Sagittarius’s ruler, Jupiter, is in dynamic opposition to the fiery trio, adding bursts of optimism to the mix. Is it real? Maybe so, maybe no, as illusionary Neptune is square the Sun, enough to delude but not close enough to make what might be a debilitating T-square out of it. So has this guy been selling us a bill of goods? Sure he has, that’s his job, and he’s done a legendary job of it.

Current events: All good things come to an end, however, even the brilliantly-sustained youth beyond its years, and just as New Year’s Rockin’ Eve rose to early fame on his last progressed full Moon (the full “harvest” of his long investment in American Bandstand), so it ended with his debilitating stroke in December of 2004 just as that progressed Moon came to a full again. Still, as Saturn (the planet of old age) has been transiting his tenth house (public image, career), he has continued to make brief appearances on the program that still bears his name, a reminder that at nearly 80, the ever-optimistic and hopeful youth inside still lives, regardless of the container.
