Jodie Foster
by John Townley
Few stars are quite so tough and gutsy while remaining completely personally mysterious and hidden as Jodie Foster. Back in the old movie studio days that combination tended to happen in male stars like Bogart or John Wayne, but this is a new world, indeed.
The tough, gutsy part leaps out of the horoscope in the form of the Pluto-Uranus-Moon conjunction opposite Jupiter and Chiron — there is tremendous, explosive force here, and energy beyond measure added by a Mars-led locomotive chart pattern. This star started working early in support of her single mom and has never let up since, pushing her way through the difficult transition from child star to adult Oscar-winner with barely a missed beat.
But the mysterious part is equally obvious. Four planets in Scorpio including Sun and Mercury in the hidden 12th house indicate a person who tells no tales (possibly because they are better left untold). Venus square Mars indicates a fundamentally shy sexuality (Tom Hanks shares this) that nevertheless smolders beneath, and that out-of-the-spotlight style is reinforced by a total lack of planets in cardinal signs or angular houses, the two sets of positions that normally make for assertiveness. This is a person who keeps to herself, does her homework, and gets the job done quietly and methodically — but if you try to push her around, thinking she’s a pushover, she will eventually explode and gun you down. Her part in The Brave One comes as close as any to reflecting her true personality in that respect.
One of her great mysteries is about her sexuality, the invasion of which began with Taxi Driver and John Hinckley and she has been pushing people away in that area ever since. Is she straight, gay, bi, something else? It may be simpler than it’s made out — with that Venus-Mars square, she’s just uncertain, ambivalent, and remains so, while being wise enough to keep quiet about it and thus use it as a strength.
Current events: One of the advantages of keeping your image private is that it doesn’t get damaged so easily. In 2003, the transit of Pluto to her Ascendant would have forced most public figures under for a year or so to restructure, but you hardly noticed it from outside this most private of figures. And so, you may not notice it when in 2009-10 Saturn passes over her MC and into her 10th house of career, usually a downer for most careers. For this tireless workhorse, it may seem like just more fuel for the fire.
