In the News:

'Not This Time' Voter Registration Bus Tour (2008)
Al Sharpton by John Townley

New York City politician and activist Al Sharpton is nothing if not contentious. A bowl chart (self-reliant) with Jupiter and Uranus leading it certainly would incline that way — it’s expansive and confident (Jupiter) in an original and explosive (Uranus) kind of way, but with great, self-contained charm (Scorpio Venus is trine the two). Opposite tenacious Mars in Capricorn, it makes for someone that spoils for a good fight and loves it when he gets one.

But because Neptune (confusion) makes a T-square out of that opposition, his fights lack the clarity and follow-through that separate momentary tactical strikes from a concerted strategic campaign, which may be why Sharpton is always in the news but never actually gets elected to public office. That may also be attributable to the fact that Mars is his only earth planet, so tenacity and the long haul aren’t what he does best. On the other hand, he is past master of acerbic wit, with a stinging Scorpio conjunction of Mercury and Saturn trine his Cancer Ascendant so he pulls out original one-liners with ease and delivers them directly on target.

What is notable about the chart is that its bowl is mostly below the horizon, while most politicians tend to have a lot above that line, keeping them naturally in the public attention. Sharpton has to work at it to keep all eyes on what he’s doing, another reason he may not have wound up as an official public servant, but more of a gadfly and upsetter of other politicians’ applecarts. He really does spend his time either comforting the afflicted or afflicting the comfortable, which doesn’t leave a lot of time for the more restrictive professions of legislator or administrator.

Current events: He’s been keeping a somewhat lower profile than usual of late as Pluto has been transiting his Moon (as it struck, he decided not to run for President!), which as it now passes may reveal a somewhat changed approach, so keep an eye out. Saturn’s just been rounding the horn of his IC as well, which tends to force you to reset your foundations, so we may have a new Al Sharpton to contend with when all of that has passed.
