'Lions for Lambs' (2007)
Robert Redford by John Townley

With Neptune ruling the Ascendant and conjunct his Moon and Mercury, Robert Redford has always been the stuff dreams are made of and fantasies projected upon. Add to that a bucket-pattern chart with Jupiter as its handle and you’ve got someone who is usually larger than life and who never stops bounding from one ambitious role to the next.

Although he shares the same birthday (though not year) as director Roman Polanski, his Sun is actually a degree earlier and the charts are as different as night and day, dark and light. Not that Redford doesn’t have a dark side, but that Saturn opposition his Moon is tucked away in the twelfth house and so he keeps it out of sight most of the time. What you do see is Neptune all the way, not only in his ability to engage a viewer’s fantasy but also in his talents in designing and framing the tale he’s telling thanks to Mercury being right between Moon and Neptune in the stellium of the three. That’s why at the height of his early acting success he was itching to get into the director’s seat and have greater control over the whole story, which he subsequently did. But, with no air in his chart, he has always left the actual screen-writing to someone else, as his craft is not the words but portraying the story itself, its inner structure and outer physical and emotional trimmings.

Although his stunning looks have always pushed him toward traditional “leading man” parts, with Mars square Uranus (the planet of comedy and surprise) he’s eminently suited for comedy when he gets the right role — and his next movie A Walk In The Woods will be a film version of the hysterically-funny Bill Bryson tale of walking the Appalachian Trail. But whatever the nature of the movie, above all Redford takes his work very seriously and with both Lights in the sixth house he is a dedicated craftsman and never lets up until the job is done and done right.

Current events: With Uranus transiting his Saturn and opposing his Virgo stellium of late, he’s been making some surprise moves, including parting with the Sundance Channel for half a billion dollars, and now appropriately dipping back into comedy. Pluto has been going back and forth over his MC, however, and Saturn taking its toll on first his Sun (last year) and now his Virgo stellium, so he’s clearly in for some transformations we may have yet to hear about or notice. Add to that a progressed full Moon and a progressed Ascendant headed for his IC and you can conclude that there are big-time conclusions underway here. The question is: what will come after that?
