'Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired' (2008)
Roman Polanski by John Townley

You don’t have to look far to see the dark side of Roman Polanski — it’s right at his MC (the reputation marker), a Moon-Pluto conjunction of compulsive emotions as part of a T-square with Mars (passion, sexuality) in the first house (self) opposite Uranus (strangeness) in the seventh house (partners). Certainly, strange, compulsive sexuality has been the theme of a majority of his films, and those qualities also played out in personal life from the murder of his wife Sharon Tate to his arrest for underage rape which forced him to flee the U.S. at the first peak of his career — when he was riding high for the likes of Chinatown and Rosemary’s Baby — for sanctuary in his native France and Poland.

It’s not just the T-square that darkens this highly creative personality — the other dark one, Saturn, is the handle of this bucket-pattern chart which makes his whole focus swing around restriction and repression and the kinds of events and activities that traditionally circle around Saturn. That began with a frighteningly traumatic childhood as a Jew in Poland under Nazi occupation, narrowly escaping death during the Holocaust, stamping him forever with the daily fears and forebodings that entailed.

Indeed, even his bright side, a Venus-Jupiter conjunction (big appetite, sexual and otherwise) helpfully sextile the Moon-Pluto is itself in the hidden twelfth house of undoings. It certainly serves to turn his dark side to creativity and self-understanding, but also hides what he likes to do behind closed doors, to be shared indirectly through his works after he has paid the price of inner learning.

He’s also a prime example of one of the heaviest transits around, that of Pluto to the Ascendant, famous for its near-extinction of Nixon before he rebirthed his image and became president. When that happens, your personal image is usually crushed, with a new one yet to come, and if you fight it, it can be especially destructive. Polanski found himself under indictment exactly at this point and (perhaps wise from his Nazi experiences to how implacable Plutonian authorities can be) made exactly the right move — he moved out, permanently, in 1978, just ahead of the law, and reconstructed his career in Europe.

Current events: for all the scandal, the move didn’t hurt him and he went on to receive many more accolades for his films, including the 2002 Academy Award for Best Director for The Pianist, from the very country still out to put him behind bars. In his mid-70s, he is still actively writing and directing films, only just now coming to a progressed full Moon, the same phase it was in when he was forced to flee the U.S. and reinvent himself. Watch for a similar, if less dramatic, manifestation.
