In the News:

HBO Special: “It’s Bad For Ya”
George Carlin by John Townley

When you think comedy, you look for Uranus, and George Carlin has that planet of sudden surprises most elevated in his chart, conjunct the MC and square the showy Leo Ascendant (which makes it the more abrasive). Of course, with Mercury conjunct the Sun, he’s sharp as a tack, and with Moon exactly on Chiron, isn’t afraid to puncture like one.

What’s just as striking about the chart is its aggressive and unflinching strength (Sagittarius Mars trine Aries Saturn) and brutal truthfulness (Jupiter opposite Pluto). He has always consistently shattered illusions, smacked down hypocrisy, and dissected the very way we think and use language. With a see-saw chart featuring Jupiter and Mars against the rest of the opposing field, it’s one hammer blow after another, with just enough time to swing back for the next strike.

Unlike comedians or writers who lean on emotional subtlety, there is none here. The only water in the chart is generational Pluto, so if your feelings are likely to get hurt, step out of his way. He’s about intellectual clarity and stark definition and takes no prisoners.

Current events: If he’s sounded ever-darker over the past few years, it’s understandable. Saturn over the Ascendant in Leo (only recently past) will have that effect, and so will progressed Sun conjunct Pluto at the end of Cancer. There’s been a Saturn-Pluto cloud hovering over that mountaintop for some time. But, amazing changes are underway. This year sees progressed and transiting Moon to his Jupiter, progressed Sun breaking out into the first degree of Leo, and progressed Mercury conjunct his Ascendant. His outlook as “hippy-dippie weatherman” was “Tonight’s forecast: Dark. Continued dark throughout most of the evening, with some widely-scattered light towards morning.” Well, Aurora will be making her appearance, at last. What are we — what is he — going to make of it? Hard to predict (never predict a comic), but a new form of insight and a whole lot more laughter are in there somewhere…
