In the News:

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
George Lucas by John Townley

George Lucas is a strange combination of high-tech visionary and dreamer of hallucinations that could only end up in something revolutionary. Most obvious for the chart of a filmmaker is the signature Mercury-Venus conjunction, so often found in the charts of visual designers in everything from photography to fashion to architecture. It’s the innate ability to calculate and give structure (Mercury) to beauty (Venus).

But here it’s in the 12th house of the more troublesome side of imagination and the subconscious, and in his case might not have come out in film at all if he hadn’t nearly killed himself in his original choice of careers, race-driving. Instead, he let the easy and loose grand air trine of Moon, Uranus, and Neptune guide his imagination toward the very edges of creative cinematography — early emulating the likes of Stan Brakhage and other highly abstract, avant-garde underground filmmakers.

Somehow, the love of cars sneaked back in and American Graffiti put him on the map, then followed by Star Wars, with that Uranus-ruled Moon high in the 10th house of fame always leading the way with a cool and inventive techno-edge. With only Mars in water, this is not a director who gets lost in the subtleties of unspoken emotions and the heart. No chick flicks here — this is a guy who follows the thrills of the mind with a large dash of humor and lots of souped-up technology from old cars to new spaceships.

Yet, with a bucket-type chart featuring the Moon as its handle, everything swings on his feelings about what he’s doing. If it gives him a charge, that’s all it takes to whip the rest of the situation into line to make the vision a reality, advantaged by that Mercury-Venus in the 12th which allows him to literally frame the dream world with his lens, or invent a new one to do the job. That independent Aquarius Moon has also led him to buck the studio system and launch new initiatives with other directors like Coppola and Spielberg that have broken the old Hollywood mold and moved filmmaking into the 21st century, not just technically, but organizationally and creatively.

Current events: With Jupiter headed for his MC and 10th house Moon next year, expect to hear lots of good things about what he’s doing and what he’s done. But, he’s actually winding down from his last thirty years and about to launch into some wholly new approaches as his progressed Moon and Sun meet in a new Moon at the end of Cancer by 2011. He’ll be putting some glorious finishing touches on his former self until then, in time for a whole new show when Jupiter hits his Ascendant in 2012.
