In the News:

Quincy Jones is in Seattle to celebrate his 75th birthday at an all-star concert at the Paramount Theatre on Sunday night
Quincy Jones by John Townley

Quincy Jones learned to tap the essence of his see-saw type chart when he uttered the famous phrase “I discovered that there was music, and there was the music business. If I were to survive, I would have to learn the difference between the two.” That was right after a successful European jazz tour in the 1950s that left him broke. Originally (and still) a true musician’s musician, he learned to swing from the purely creative to the totally commercial and integrate the two.

Although there’s lots to say about his sensitive Pisces Sun and deeply emotional Scorpio Moon, the key to his diversity and amazing creativity in all areas of music is the fascinating balance of the overall chart itself. Like reflecting bells, the chart spread of Uranus to Saturn perfectly nestles into the center of the wider opposing spread of Pluto to Moon. Pluto, Moon, and Mercury are all in connecting multi-septiles (the 7th harmonic, of big-picture, blockbuster arranging) and Jupiter and Saturn are in biquintile (the 5th harmonic of timing and proportion here reflected in the two business significators). The symmetry and subtle interlinking is just so pretty and perfect for taking the aesthetics of music to a huge commercial level.

This amazing ability to bring both musical harmony and financial viability together allowed him to swing through the seeming polar opposites of arranging for first Frank Sinatra and then Michael Jackson with aplomb, with any number of successful movie scores along the way. And, as an extra, his social and political activism have helped elevate the causes of civil rights in America and abroad by lending his fame to good causes and mentoring other musicians to help them get into the business.

Current events: Jupiter has moved into his first house, bringing with it another wave of plaudits and recognition (he most recently hosted the Grammy Awards), and you can expect a second wave of inner inspiration to produce more as his progressed Sun moves over his MC later this year. This is one artist whose musical efforts, from his first jazz notes in the 1950s through the British Invasion (he produced Leslie Gore) to Sinatra to Jackson to hip-hop just never quit. With a chart that bell-like, expect him to keep ringing forever.
