Carole King
by John Townley
For such a successful songwriter, Carole King is a strange bird, indeed. In the world of pop song emotions (one might call that emotion lite), her chart is without water, the signature of one who lacks and therefore compulsively seeks emotion. She made her initial mark cranking out one hit after another in the early 1960s with partner and later husband Gerry Goffin. He was three years older but a close sign birthmate born on February 11, 1939, who had the needed water, but their composite had none (they later divorced). Perhaps this general lack of water explains the over-exaggerated, almost comic-book emotions that characterize their long string of teen hits together.
Certainly, with a see-saw chart, half of which is mostly the personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus) swinging against the rest of the more social and professional ones, this is a person who initially does well with a partner and learns to depend on one. With pleasant Libra Ascendant trine the Sun, she’s a crowd pleaser, though with Jupiter opposite the Moon, she’s either out there entirely or retreating and on the shy side, which a lack of water aggravates. Indeed, it took her a very longtime to transition from a behind-the-scenes writer to an in-front-of-the-microphone singer. In fact, it wasn’t until 1971 that she succeeded on her own with Tapestry, just as progressed Moon lit up her MC for the first time. Since then, she’s worked mainly a lot of solo, though with a few partnerings as well.
Current events: With transiting Neptune just coming off her Sun and a progressed new Moon only a year old, she’s emerging from a life-changing fog that may display her in a totally new light as she makes her emergence. The final story on that will be told by her progressed Sun and Mercury also moving into her seventh house. This is a partnering kind of artist who will find that second voice again for yet another round in the limelight, even if only by penning some new hit songs.
