Roger Federer has the perfect chart of both a gentleman and a champion. He didn’t always seem that way, and his 12th house Leo Sun square a smoldering Scorpio Moon conjunct explosive Uranus got him into a lot of trouble early in life when he displayed a highly emotional style and literally threw tantrums on the court. But having meticulous Virgo Ascendant with Venus rising, he’s got the perfect eye for fashion and style and doesn’t hesitate to display it. It’s square Neptune, so not everyone would agree with his taste (most recently “Darth Federer” all in black at the U.S. Open). But, with an independent bowl chart led by Mars he is both energetic and entirely self-sufficient and politely doesn’t really care what anyone thinks about him.

What gives him such a smooth but dominant playing style? Could be that Jupiter-Saturn conjunction which combines the ability to expand and adopt new strategies (Jupiter) while keeping an ever-steady hand (Saturn) on the details of his game. He doesn’t rush in with a single approach to all, but slowly sizes up his opponent very coolly until he discovers the flaws to exploit and then homes in for the kill, all while barely breaking a sweat.

Current events: He is truly coming into his prime right now as his progressed Sun is only a degree from breaking out over his Ascendant, as he heads for a solid progressed lunar return late next year. And with progressed Mercury just into Libra, you can expect an even more aggressive and adaptive game coming from this young master, further boosted by a Mars return next year. It won’t be without challenge, however, as his Virgo Ascendant and Venus will be hit by Saturn at the same time, which means everyone will be after his crown and he’ll have to earn it by continued hard work. Progressed Mars on his North Node is a further indicator of just that, and he should probably be careful with himself physically, as his injury-free charmed life may not last under these harsh influences.
